  • Remove Clutter!

    This may seem very obvious but it is one of the most difficult and time consuming items on this list. It includes not only clearing off surface countertop spaces but also these areas:

    • Clean out closets - Ideally you should aim for about 20% of empty space in your closets. The master bedroom closet is especially important. My general rule of thumb is if you haven't worn it in over 3 years you are unlikely to.
    • Pantry cabinets - This space should look well organized and not over crowded.

  • Upgrade the countertops

    Replacing countertops with either granite or quartz counters can be a way to boost the look of your kitchen or bathroom without doing a full renovation. Some fabricators have remnant pieces that for smaller areas can be a cost effective way of changing out the countertop.

  • Refresh a bath or shower surround

    Monica Rose Designs |

    This can be done by removing the grungy silicone around the perimeter of the tub or shower base and re-caulking with fresh silicone. If you have a tile surround that is in good shape but just an unattractive colour you can paint the tiles a neutral colour to brighten the surround. You can also use various acrylic panels to cover up existing tiles. Sometimes just adding a fresh looking new shower curtain can be enough to draw attention away from a less attractive surround.

    Having too many accessories scattered throughout a house is similar to having too much clutter. Edit accessories into clear focal point areas like the dining room table, coffee table, fireplace mantle, dining room sideboard etc. You also don't want to eliminate all of your accessories as this can make a home feel sterile and unlived in. You want to strike a good balance between making a home feel inviting but without feeling over personalized.
